Bio
NAME: Sharon Carlson
What got you into barefooting? I saw some guys doing it in a ski show and decided that if the guys can do it, I can.
How did you lean to barefoot?I learned long line (before booms).
Who was your first barefoot instructor? Some male friends on my lake.
Tell us about your first tournament. It was the first Midwest regional tournament at our water ski show site (Chain Skimmers) I didn’t know what it was, just that it was some kind of competition being held at our site. I talked some of my fellow female barefooters into competing with me. We were allowed to do two starts. I did a step off and a beach start. I don’t remember anything else.
How did you feel the first time you barefooted? Lot’s of pain.
Why do you continue to barefoot? I’m masochistic—it’s my s&m diet plan. It keeps me in shape. It’s a natural high. It keeps me young. I’m addicted to it.
Who has inspired you in this sport? Joe Knapp, Banana George.
What are your barefooting goals? To do it until I die.
Have you held any records? Lots—don’t remember them. Currently W5 tricks, W6 tricks and wakes.
Have you won any tournaments? Yes
What skiers have you enjoyed watching and why? All of them, but especially the little kids.
How often do you train/ski? As much as I can during the summer—3-4 times a week.
Do you have a nickname and how did you get it?
Tell us about your family. I have three kids (girl36,boy27,girl20)—two of which are serious waterskiers—mostly show skiing. All three are teachers or studying to be.
What other activities do you participate in? Rollerblading, motorcycle riding, ski diving. I take groups of people on humanitarian missions to Guatemala.
What do you do for a living? Kindergarten teacher.
How did the 2007 barefoot season go for you? It went very well. No injuries—set two national records.
What can we expect from you in 2008. To keep on footing.
Do you have a motto? Feel the pain/fear and do it anyway
