Bio

NAME:  Keith St.Onge

What got you into barefooting?

I started Waterskiing in the Lake Umbagog Waterski Club

How did you lean to barefoot?

Mike Seipel taught me during a clinic he did for our ski club

Who was your first barefoot instructor?

Gary “Swampy” Bouchard

Tell us about your first tournament.

All I remember was that I couldn’t do a deep water start so I stepped off a ski.  My father and Swampy told the tournament director to tell me that skis were to be outlawed for next year and if I didn’t learn a deep water start, I couldn’t foot in any tournaments next season.  Oh yeah, I took third out of three!

How did you feel the first time you barefooted?

It came quite natural to me so I guess it just felt naturally fun!

Why do you continue to barefoot?

Wow, good question!  When I was fourteen years old a news paper reporter asked me, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”  I replied, “I want to become a professional barefoot waterskier, move to FL and open my own barefoot ski school.”  I guess if you think it enough and say it enough it all comes true.  So, to answer your question…I’m living my dream and love to Barefoot Waterski!

Who has inspired you in this sport?

Most of my inspiration came when I was young so I’d have to say the early pro’s.  Mike Seipel, Rick Powell and Scott Grey.  Ron Scarpa had a lot to do with my inspiration but that didn’t come until I was in my teens.  I learnt a lot by competing against him.

What are your barefooting goals?

I just achieved my barefoot goals by winning the 2006 World Overall Title.  Now, I’m trying to get more business oriented so I can milk the life style of a pro waterskier for as long as possible.  So, many of my decisions are based around my ski school and BarefootCentral.com.  Other goals on the water would be winning Footstock, The Racing Cup Series and more titles that define me as the best all around barefooter.

Have you held any records?

I’ve held about 10 world trick records, one jump record and currently the slalom record.  In 2006 I set four pending world trick records.  I’m the only barefoot waterskier to hold all three records at one time or another with the new 1989 slalom point change.

Have you won any tournaments?

I’ve won 7 National Overall Titles in the Open/Open Pro division, three world slalom titles and 2006 World Overall Champion

What skiers have you enjoyed watching and why?

I’ve enjoyed watching fourteen-year-old Heinrich Sam!  His father reminds me of my old coach, Swampy and Heinrich reminds me a lot of myself when I was that age.  He has a lot of heart, will power and Pride.

How often do you train/ski?

I’d say I was a little lazy from 2001-2004 with my skiing.  I was trying to establish a new business in a state I wasn’t from.  I didn’t want to step on anyone toes in the process so my skiing took a back seat.  Back to the question…how often?  I get that question a lot and there’s no real answer.  Between my traveling schedule and ski school schedule you’d think it would be often but it’s not as much as I’d like.  And then when I do have the chance to go ski on my own I don’t feel like putting the boat in the water.  This past 2005-2006 season I was rejuvenated training for the worlds.  I skied every day that I could depending on weather and travel schedule.  My training could’ve been for an hour or thirty minutes.  It all depends how I’m foot’n at that very moment.  If I feel I need to clean something up then I take the time and work on it.  I like to take long sets on shoe skis because it’s an awesome workout!

Do you have a nickname and how did you get it?

I have no nickname!  So, lets get some idea’s rolling.  If you have a legitimate name send it to me: kso@barefootcentral.com

Tell us about your family.

My sister (Kendra) and I were born in Nashua, NH (Southern NH).  She was born on Dec. 8, 1983.  When I turned eight my parents decided to move back to their hometown Berlin, NH.  That’s about three hours North and 45min. from the Canadian border.  I went from first grade recess straight to Berlin due to my father suffering a serious injury while at work.  He got squished between a Linesmen truck and Milk truck.  The next season we started going to my mother’s father’s cabin on Lake Umbabgog.  That was home of the Lake Umbagog Waterski Show Team.  Swampy was the organizer and reason why I’m barefooting today.

What other activities do you participate in?

I enjoy doing anything that involves competing.  I love to wake surf and kick box in the off season.  I used to snow ski and snowmobile when I lived up North and always try to get a little of it in during the winter months.

What do you do for a living?

I am a Professional Barefoot Waterskier.  I run my ski school (BarefootCentral.com Ski & Training Center, work for BarefootCentral.com and perform traveling clinics in the summer months.

How did the 2005 barefoot season go for you?

2005 season went great outside of barefooting!  I bought a house in Winter Haven on a chain of lakes and moved the ski school to its new and final location.  I packed my summer with clinics for a nice down payment on the house.  While traveling for three months straight I went through my whole loan process many miles away from home.  Not an easy task but well worth it!  I started my training for the 2006 worlds in Oct. 2005.  I began by dropping some weight and changing my eating habits.  While kick boxing twice a week in the evenings I skied every other day and focused on the basics.  I spent a month just on the shoe skis perfecting tricks until they felt the way I wanted them to feel!  I then went to South Africa in Jan. 2006 to train with Eugene and Heinrich Sam.  Eugene gave me the opportunity to break the world slalom record behind their Raven.  This boat is similar to the old style FlightCraft that current world record holder Brian Fuchs had the record on.  I skied past the record three times for an outcome of 20.6.  .1 over the 12-year-old record.

How did the 2006 barefoot season go for you?

I currently own the World Slalom Record, skied past 10,000 points four times for 4 pending world records, which one of them will pass for a new world record and first time World Overall Champion.  I can now say I’ve met all my barefooting goals…well…almost!

What can we expect from you in 2007.

2007 will be an interesting year for me.  I have some new goals like winning Footstock and the BarefootCentral.com Racing Cup Series.  I’m also going to take my business to the next level and focus on that as well.

Do you have a motto?

I good friend told me,

“If you can imagine it,

You can achieve it,

If you can dream it,

You can become it.
