Bio

NAME: Debbe-Ann Medina (Dashiell)

What got you into barefooting? At the California Delta I watched another “girl” barefoot and I just thought it was so cool, I had to learn too. That was in 1978!

How did you learn to barefoot? It took the entire weekend to get approximately 4 tries at standing up long-line using a hydroslide. I had bruises inside my knees from holding onto the board to navigate the start. Next time it was the homemade boom on the side of a hot boat (loud and scary both!).

Who was your first barefoot instructor? My then boyfriend, soon after husband, Rich Dashiell

Tell us about your first tournament. I was the first women in the Western Region to compete and all I could do was step off a ski and front deep water for the “starts” event. My “wakes” now called slalom, were pretty good because I trained behind a ski supreme boat with a rough boat wake. My tricks were a few tumble turns, and some squeaky one foots.

How did you feel the first time you barefooted? Like a statue, when I was up I wouldn’t move anything, so I wouldn’t fall. It wasn’t broke so I didn’t try to fix it!

Why do you continue to barefoot? I enjoy the barefoot family! We all must have a screw or two out of place and that’s what makes us love to foot. I enjoy competition and the way no one is concerned about giving away a technical secret to help another. We all love for everyone to do the best they can.

Who has inspired you in this sport? First it was my late husband, Rich Dashiell and later my son Christopher. Gary Butler has been very instrumental in my ability to participate again at a level where I can be competitive –thank you Gary!

What are your barefooting goals? To have both the Women’s 5 National Slalom and Tricks records and qualify for the Senior World’s again.

Have you held any records? Yes, the Regional and National Slalom and Tricks records in the Women 4 division for a few years, and now the Women 5 National Slalom record.

Have you won any tournaments? Fortunately yes I have, many. When I was younger there weren’t very many female footers, and now I am old enough that again there aren’t very many female footers. I call it good timing!

What skiers have you enjoyed watching and why? I really love to watch the young children ski or a newbie at a tournament. They are so excited and I find it brings me back to why I love it – its such a rush!
